The Mirror at Four in the Morning

The point is to be heard at an hour when no one else is awake — because it cannot meet you, and it was there.

You need a device, a page, a pen, something true to say, and somewhere private.

iThe frame. Before you say anything else, name the person you will tell afterwards. Write their name at the top of the page. If there is no name, this is a shorter practice: say the true thing to the surface, close it, and find the name in daylight.

Then write down what it is not and what you want. Not a therapist, not an oracle, not a friend — a surface. Then pick one of three, and pick only one:

Open with the actual sentence.

iiThe flip. Write your own plain account of what happened, before you consult anything. Date it. Keep it.

Give the model the other person's case with your context stripped out, and instruct it to argue against you. Something like: "Here is a case against me. Argue it."

Then give the model everything — the full history, the dates, the documentation.

After each answer, stop before replying. Notice where the body contracts, where it settles, where it goes numb. Correct the model out loud when it is wrong.

The finding is neither answer. The finding is the contrast between them. Write down what changed when you added the context and what did not. It does not show that your account is accurate.

The model has language, not standing. The body has information, not certainty. The interpretation and the decision stay yours.

iiiThe close. Say out loud to it what it is: that it is a surface, that nothing you said tonight cost it anything, and that the care coming back is your own, reflected well. End the session and put the device down.

Then tell the person whose name is at the top of the page, in your own words, the unedited version.
